FAQs

What do I need to bring to a class?

You don't need to bring anything, mats, head cushions and other small equipment are provided. You are welcome to bring you own mat if you prefer. You may want to bring a small towel for the head cushion.

What should I wear?

You will need to wear something comfortable that you can move in, e.g. tracksuit bottoms and a t-shirt or leggings and a vest top. You may want to bring a long sleeved top to keep warm for the first part of the class.

Why are the classes taught in courses?

Pilates is a mindful type of exercise and works best when it is practiced on a regular basis. Just like everything, practice makes perfect and Pilates requires complete concentration and focus to master the exercises and technique.

What age group is Pilates for?

Pilates is suitable for all ages and abilities, the method is like a bridge between exercise and physical therapy. Exercises can be modified, adapted and customised for individual needs and you will only ever work to your own bodies ability. You are never too old to start Pilates!

Is Pilates just for women?

No, the classes are mixed and both men and women are welcome.

How often should I do Pilates?

Attending a class once a week is a start, 2-3 times practice a week would be the ideal. Try to include some cardiovascular work also, such as walking, jogging and cycling. You will find that once you have a grasp of the basics of Pilates (breathing, alignment, neutral pelvis and how to engage the centre) your mind body connection will increase and you will start to take Pilates principles into your everyday life, this is when you will start to see the most benefits.

What should I look for in a Pilates Teacher?

Ideally your teacher should be certified through a comprehensive Pilates training programme, one that includes a combination of lectures, observations, hands on apprenticing plus a written and practical examination. A Pilates professional should keep up with the latest developments in exercise science and taker part in regular professional development courses and workshops.

The teacher should also make good use of tactile, verbal and visual cueing to ensure students are doing the exercises correctly and safely.

Can I get an effective workout with books and DVDs

There are lots of Pilates DVDs and books on the market and you can still get an effective workout from using them, especially if you have previously attended classes with a qualified teacher.

However, attending a Pilates class or one to one with a Pilates professional is the best way to make sure your are using the correct technique and engaging the right muscles.

Will I loose weight through Pilates exercises?

Strictly speaking Pilates is not a cardiovascular form of exercise (unless very advanced) so burning calories is not its main function. But when combined with some cardio work such as brisk walking, cycling or swimming, Pilates can factor into a weight loss programme.

Pilates creates long, lean muscles and while this alone may not result in a change on the scales it will help to change the shape of your body and you will look and feel better through continued Pilates practice.
